Labelling Requirements Checklist

Packaged cooking oils and ghee must display the following information:

  • Name of the Food: (Specific type, e.g., “Refined Sunflower Oil”, “Cow Ghee”). The name must be specific and comply with FSSAI naming conventions. Examples include “Refined Rice Bran Oil,” “Pure Cow Ghee,” or “Olive Oil - Extra Virgin.”
  • List of Ingredients: (if applicable, e.g., blended oils, antioxidants, vitamins). A list of ingredients is required for blended oils or when additives like antioxidants or vitamins are added. Ingredients must be listed in descending order of proportion, as per FSSAI guidelines.
  • Nutritional Information: (per 100g or 100ml). Mandatory nutritional information includes energy, protein, carbohydrates, total fat, saturated fat, trans fat, and cholesterol. The information must be declared per 100g or 100ml of the product, following the format specified by FSSAI.
  • Vegetarian Declaration: (Green dot). The green dot symbol indicates that the product is vegetarian, as per FSSAI regulations.
  • Manufacturer/Packer Name & Full Address: The name and complete address of the manufacturer or packer are required for traceability purposes. The address must be accurate and include the pin code.
  • Net Quantity: (Weight or Volume). The net quantity of the product must be declared accurately in terms of weight (e.g., grams, kilograms) or volume (e.g., milliliters, liters).
  • Date of Manufacture/Packing: The date of manufacture or packing must be displayed in the format specified by FSSAI (e.g., DD/MM/YYYY). Accurate dating is essential for determining the product’s shelf life.
  • “Best Before” or “Use By” Date: “Best Before” indicates the date until which the product will retain its optimal quality. “Use By” indicates the date after which the product may not be safe to consume. The appropriate date must be declared based on the product’s nature and shelf life.
  • FSSAI License Number: The FSSAI license number is mandatory and must be displayed prominently on the label. It signifies that the manufacturer or packer is registered and compliant with FSSAI regulations.
  • Storage/Use Instructions: (if applicable). Storage instructions (e.g., “Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight”) and use instructions (e.g., “Do not overheat”) should be provided if they are essential for maintaining the product’s quality and safety.
  • Fortification Declaration: (+F logo, if applicable). If the product is fortified with vitamins or minerals, the +F logo must be displayed, along with the name and quantity of the added nutrients.
  • Trans Fat Content Declaration: The trans fat content must be declared as per FSSAI regulations. There are permissible limits for trans fat content in oils and fats, and these must be adhered to.
