Color Test for Oils and Ghee
How to Perform the Color Test for Oils and Ghee
This test helps determine the purity of oils and ghee by visually assessing their color. Adulterants can alter the natural color of oils and ghee, making this a useful initial assessment.
Materials:
- Glass containers
- White background
Instructions:
- Pour a small amount of the oil or ghee into a glass container.
- Place the container against a white background.
- Observe the color of the oil or ghee in natural light.
Expected Results:
- Pure Oil/Ghee: The oil or ghee should have a consistent and natural color. For example, ghee typically has a golden yellow color, while sunflower oil has a light yellow color.
- Adulterated Oil/Ghee: The oil or ghee may have an unnatural or inconsistent color, or appear overly bright or dull.
Limitations:
This test is subjective and can be affected by lighting conditions. It is best used as a preliminary test and should be combined with other tests for a more accurate assessment.
Caveats:
Use clean and clear glass containers for accurate color assessment. Avoid using colored or opaque containers, as they can distort the color of the oil or ghee.
