Free Fatty Acid (FFA) Test for Oil
How to Perform the Free Fatty Acid (FFA) Test for Oil
This test helps determine the purity of oil by estimating the free fatty acid content using baking soda and water. High FFA content indicates rancidity.
Materials:
- Clear glass or bottle
- Baking soda
- Water
- Oil
Instructions:
- Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda in 1/2 cup of warm water.
- Add 2 tablespoons of oil to the baking soda solution.
- Shake the mixture vigorously and let it stand for 30 minutes.
- Observe the formation of soap-like bubbles or foam.
Expected Results:
- Pure Oil: Minimal or no soap-like bubbles or foam formation.
- Adulterated Oil: Significant soap-like bubbles or foam formation, indicating a high level of free fatty acids and rancidity.
Limitations:
This test is an estimate and not a precise measurement of FFA content.
Caveats:
Use warm water to dissolve the baking soda effectively.
