Iodine Test for Oil
How to Perform the Iodine Test for Oil
This test helps determine the purity of oil by observing the color change when mixed with iodine solution. The presence of non-edible oils can prevent the iodine color from fading.
Materials:
- Test tube
- Iodine solution
- Oil
Instructions:
- Take 1 teaspoon of oil in a test tube.
- Add a few drops of iodine solution to the test tube.
- Mix well and let it stand for a few minutes.
- Observe the color change.
Expected Results:
- Pure Oil: The color of the iodine solution will fade or remain light yellow.
- Adulterated Oil: The iodine solution will retain its dark brown color, indicating the presence of non-edible oils.
Limitations:
This test is not definitive and can be affected by the concentration of iodine solution.
Caveats:
Use fresh iodine solution for accurate results.
