Nitric Acid Test for Ghee

How to Perform the Nitric Acid Test for Ghee

This test helps determine the purity of ghee by observing the color change when mixed with nitric acid. The presence of vegetable oils can cause a reddish color change.

Materials:

  • Test tube
  • Nitric acid
  • Ghee

Instructions:

  1. Take 1 teaspoon of melted ghee in a test tube.
  2. Add an equal amount of nitric acid to the test tube.
  3. Mix well and let it stand for a few minutes.
  4. Observe the color change.

Expected Results:

  • Pure Ghee: The color of the mixture will remain unchanged or turn light yellow.
  • Adulterated Ghee: The mixture will turn reddish, indicating the presence of vegetable oils.

Limitations:

Use caution when handling nitric acid. This test should be performed by adults only.
