Smell Test for Oils and Ghee

How to Perform the Smell Test for Oils and Ghee

This test helps determine the purity of oils and ghee by assessing their aroma. Adulterants can introduce unusual or unpleasant odors.

Materials:

  • Clean glass containers

Instructions:

  1. Pour a small amount of the oil or ghee into a clean glass container.
  2. Gently swirl the container to release the aroma.
  3. Inhale and carefully assess the smell.

Expected Results:

  • Pure Oil/Ghee: The oil or ghee should have a characteristic pleasant and natural aroma.
  • Adulterated Oil/Ghee: The oil or ghee may have a rancid, musty, chemical, or otherwise unnatural odor.

Limitations:

This test is subjective and relies on the individual’s sense of smell. It is best used as a preliminary test and should be combined with other tests for a more accurate assessment.

Caveats:

Ensure that the glass container is clean and free from any residual odors. Avoid using containers that have previously held strong-smelling substances.
