Water Test for Oils

How to Perform the Water Test for Oils

This test helps determine the purity of oils by observing their behavior in water. Adulterants can alter the way oil interacts with water.

Materials:

  • Glass of water
  • Dropper

Instructions:

  1. Fill a glass with water.
  2. Using a dropper, carefully add a drop of the oil to the surface of the water.
  3. Observe how the oil spreads and behaves on the water’s surface.

Expected Results:

  • Pure Oil: The oil should spread evenly and form a thin film on the water’s surface.
  • Adulterated Oil: The oil may form droplets, sink, or not spread evenly, indicating the presence of adulterants.

Limitations:

This test is not definitive and can be affected by the type of oil and water temperature.

Caveats:

Use clean water and a clean dropper for accurate results.
